There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

The Way It Is is my favorite poem by William Stafford. His son, Kim Stafford, wrote a book about his father, Early Morning, where he uses the lines of this poem as chapter headings. I posted the poem on my blog and paired it with a Vedic expression. I also shared it with Kim. He appreciated it. I call the grouping uncommon thread ... cosmic thread. https://theuncarvedblog.com/2009/09/05/william-stafford-the-way-it-is/
