few are willing

To deliver oneself up,
to hand oneself over,
entrust oneself completely to the silence
of a wide landscape of woods and hills,
or sea and desert; to sit still while
the sun comes up over the land
and fills its silences with light.

...few are willing to belong completely
to such silence, to let it soak into their bones,
to breathe nothing but silence, to feed
on silence, and to turn the very substance of their life
into a living and vigilant silence.

~ Thomas Merton
from Thoughts in Solitude

erin led me here. How lovely of her, to point me all the way from Australia to such a place of beauty and of solitude. Not that we don't have our own moments of solitude and of beauty in Australia - we have many - but it's good to meet it all again here. Thank you.

I long in my heart to live this way, entrusted to The Silence, not just lack of noise, but entrusted to the Sacred Silence within. Like a fish needing water to live. And it's been my observation that only the Saints, Sages, Yogis, and Gurus are able to live this way... because they are able to "separate" themselves enough from the world to LIVE the Silence... I often think I should have been a monk! LOLOL
